End of Space
Travel farther and faster by standing still
Fringe Traveler Incorporated is a small, decaying factory on the verge of bankruptcy. They make sensory deprivation tanks, a once trendy fad fast fading into obscurity. The owner, Garrett, discovers his hidden genius and builds a vehicle that can journey to the end of space - traveling faster and farther than anything before - by being absolutely motionless.
What exists beyond space? This novella blends hard science fiction with cosmological, spiritual and philosophical speculation, questioning the very nature of reality in a search for ultimate answers.
[This is a perfect vehicle for M Night Shyamalan when he is at his movie making best. The story fits his spiritually toned movies with their surprise endings. Need a new movie idea Mr. Shyamalan? Make End of Space. Your people can contact my people.]

End of Space is a short story about a factory owner on the verge of bankruptcy. With nothing to lose, the owner, Garret, enlists an employee, Ray, to help build a vehicle that can travel to the end of space.
The novella reminds me of the movie Contact, where the goal is a historic scientific achievement to be attained after a long, and arduous journey. Likewise, End of Space takes a long build up for the journey, but it is well worth the wait.
The author spends a good deal of time and energy describing what the end of space would look and feel like. it is a metaphysical realm of knowledge, wonder, and perfection. To me, the end of space is a different dimension than the one we occupy in.
Alas, with the end of space explored, the story quickly wraps up in an unexpected twist, but ultimately a logical ending.

Unlike one of the reviewers, I have read a lot of science fiction over the course of many years, and surprises aren't easy to come by. However, the author's concept of the "end of space" was definitely a surprise. I found the narrative engaging and the characters very likeable. It was a story built around an idea rather than action/adventure. No kidnappings, terrorists, interplanetary wars and general mayhem, just an entertaining presentation of a concept. I have to say I found it an enjoyable read.

CONCEPT/PLOT - 5 stars
I must admit, I have not read a lot of science fiction, but my goal has been to branch out to all types of genres I haven't read before. The concept for End of Space is quite unique and I found myself unable to stop reading once I got started. I love unique stories. Garrett believes he has found a way to transport a being to the end of space, and here my lack of physics fails me a bit, but I understood the logic enough to follow what was going on. I don't consider myself a science geek in the least, so perhaps that's one reason why I've shied away from science fiction for a good deal of my life. But if I can grasp basic concepts, I seem to do okay. This book allowed me to do just that, and it was not a hindrance to me. There is a lot of conceptual imaginings and philosophical ponderings, but in a good way that enhanced the story. If you can let go a little bit and fall into the flow of the story, you'll be fine. The ending packed a moral punch and was quite a nice surprise, although it did seem to end a bit abruptly.
